Ever go to a conference and never see where you are? We thought you could use a mid-conference break to stretch your legs and see the San Diego sights. We have organized a whirlwind tour with ample opportunity to walk about and chat with your friends. Significant others are especially welcome.

You can buy your tickets at the bottom of this page. There's an Early Bird Discount.

Here’s the plan:

14:45 Meet outside the Reception at the Hacienda and board the Old Town Trolley for a short drive.

15:15 Arrive at Balboa Park, the largest urban cultural park in North America. It covers nearly a square mile with about 20 gardens to walk and nearly 20 museums to see ranging from the amazing Model Railroad Museum (larges in N. America) to the Museum of Art to the Air and Space Museum. You’re free to explore on your own and we’ll provide you a Park brochure when you register for the conference.

Since the museums mostly close at 17:00, we’ve arranged these optional 30-minute private docent tours to get some highlights. You can do none, just one, two or all three as you prefer.

  • 15:30 Tour of the Rueben H. Fleet Science Center – After a brief tour of their K-8 science programs and a peek into the planetarium, you're free interact with the kinetic exhibits, take in planetarium show for a fee (16:00 and 17:00), or move on.

  • 16:15 Special Exhibit Tour of the San Diego Natural History Museum’s Cerutti Mastodon Discovery by Michael Wall, VP of Research. The Museum’s “discovery” (after 25 years of research) of human activity in San Diego 130,000 years ago was the No. 1 trending news item in the world after its publication in Nature in April. [This is limited to the first 25 who register.]

  • 17:00 Botanical Building Private Tour – the museums are closed but our Park Ranger has her own key to this beautiful arboretum for a private guided tour just for us.

There are at least two good spots in the Park for a bite or a libation – The Prado and Panama66. Don’t try to see the San Diego Zoo – it takes more than a day to see all of it. Save the Zoo for another day and, if ambitious, see a bit more of Balboa Park too.

18:00 Board the Old Town Trolley for a one-hour hosted sightseeing tour of San Diego and Coronado. Our private tour follows their normal hop-on-hop tour route that you can see here for details. When you are finished, you will know where you want to return – and can say you have “seen San Diego”.

19:00Gaslamp Quarter for dinner. There are 130 restaurants and bars, 25 nightlife venues, 70 retailers, and 5 art galleries there –so spend your time wisely. It’s a great stroll for blocks of side walk cafes to choose your spot.  There’s a shopping mall nearby if so inclined.

21:15 Board the Old Town Trolley for your return trip to the Hacienda via Little Italy. Home by 21:30.

So we’ve planned “free play” time as well as a bit of structure. You’ll get a park brochure with your tour registration package that will include a Balboa Park brochure to plan your visit there and a list of restaurants to consider in the Gaslamp Quarter. Your guides can provide the rest.
